El MP4-25 fue presentado en las instalaciones de Vodafone en Newbury (Reino Unido), el 29 de enero de 2010. Al igual que el F10 de Ferrari, la parte trasera del monoplaza se ocultó con recelo para evitar que alguien pueda copiarles su idea.

The McLaren MP4-25 was a Formula One motor racing car designed and raced by McLaren in the 2010 season. The car, which was driven by 2009 World Champion Jenson Button[2] and 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, was officially unveiled at title sponsor Vodafone's headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire, United Kingdom on January 29, 2010.
The Red Bull Racing team complained to the FIA about the legality of the MP4-25's rear wing. The design uses a small "snorkel" air scoop mounted in front of the driver that channels air through a duct in the cockpit and towards the rear of the car. Changes in the pressure in the duct, in combination with small slots on the rear wing, causes the wing to enter a stalled state at high speed, reducing aerodynamic drag and allowing the car as much as an extra 6 mph (9.7 km/h) on straights. The effect is controlled by the driver covering up a small hole in the cockpit with his left leg - this is not considered by the FIA to be a moveable aerodynamic device, which would be banned under the technical regulations. Known internally as the RW80 it is widely called the "F-Duct" system either due to the shape of the air intake or the fact that it is beside the F of the Vodafone logo. Another term for the system is switchable rear wing (SRW). The car was inspected on the Thursday prior to the Bahrain Grand Prix and cleared to take part in the race.

Obwohl Mercedes-Benz durch die teilweise Übernahme von Brawn GP ein eigenes Rennteam für die Saison 2010 aufbaute, wurde der Motorenliefervertrag zwischen McLaren und Mercedes aufrechterhalten. So wird auch der MP4-25 vom 2,4-Liter-Mercedes-Benz-FO108X-V8-Motor angetrieben. Innovativ ist ein neues aerodynamisches System, genannt „F-Schacht“ (engl. F-duct), bei dem Luft durch das Auto so Richtung Heckflügel geleitet wird, dass der Anpressdruck auf der Geraden am Flügel „abreißt“. Dadurch sind um bis zu 10 km/h schnellere Endgeschwindigkeiten möglich. Nach einer Anfrage von Red Bull Racing bei der FIA, ob dieses System legal sei, wurde das Konzept von der obersten Motorsportbehörde als mit den Regeln konform bestätigt.
Nach einem dritten Platz von Lewis Hamilton beim ersten Rennen der Saison – dem Großen Preis von Bahrain, feierte Jenson Button beim zweiten Saisonrennen, dem Großen Preis von Australien, den ersten Rennsieg des MP4-25.
Beim Großen Preis von China feierte McLaren mit dem MP4-25 einen Doppelsieg. Jenson Button siegte in einem turbulenten Rennen vor Lewis Hamilton und übernahm die Führung in der Fahrerweltmeisterschaft.
